Today I was banned from Facebook. Don’t panic! My Facebook rights should be reinstated tomorrow. As this was my first offense, I only got a 24 hour ban. I guess that repeat offenders get banned for good.
So, what did I do that was so wrong? I posted this photo:
My reprimand and subsequent time-out from Facebook has put me through a range of emotions today not dissimilar to the 5 Stages of Grief:
- Denial: What? I’m banned? Can’t be. Let me update my status about that. WTF? I can’t update my status?? Can’t be. Let me try again.
- Anger: WTF? I didn’t do anything wrong! Who is the idiot in charge of this ridiculous process? Did someone actually report this picture as inappropriate? What kind of sick person would think that way? This is not fair! I have something to say about it! But I’ve been muted! ARRRGGGH!
- Bargaining: Maybe I can send an email to someone explaining the misunderstanding. Obviously the carefully crafted rules and regulations regarding offensive or nude photos did not have this photo in mind. There’s been a mistake. We can work this out, surely!
- Depression: There is no way to contact an actual person at Facebook. Figures. What about all the funny stuff that keeps popping in my head? These are gems that are just going to be lost to my own poor memory. What should I do now? Hmmm. I have nothing to do. My life is empty. Wow. I spend a lot of time on Facebook. I’m pathetic.
- Acceptance: OK, deep breaths. The rules are there to protect my very own naked children against pervs. Yes, I think banning me for this is an overreaction, but it is what it is. It’s just a day. Do I have a Facebook habit? Sure. But it could be worse. I could be doing meth.
Wow, that is definitely an overreaction! It shows baby bums. Not even the front side. Just little bums. There are ladies out there with their boobs hanging out of there shirts and they are concerned about a funny kid moment!
That’s fucking hilarious because if you look through my pics you can see breastfeeding and at least 3 pics of naked children.
I guess it’s because mine is a public page rather than just a personal page. I have the same picture on my personal Facebook page with no problems.
I understand Facebook’s move and find no problem to the action. Yes, there are weirdos and perverts in the world. But also, yes, someone probably reported the picture because it was used on a public page. And the quickest way Facebook can react is a temporary ban that prevents the poster from spamming or posting similar (or worse) pictures soon after (as there are people that do that and cause many problems). It is an adorable pic, though. Sorry that it happened. I was banned once on Facebook just by mere error once but was reinstated within a few hours after emailing the support team out of confusion.
Love the blog.
That’s awesome this was your biggest problem today! Sorry you got banned. I totally missed you!
I understand your reaction. What could be cuter than that photo but we’re viewing it as normal people. I’ve actually cautioned my daughter about posting those precious photos of the kids in the bathtub for fear the crazies out there would get hold of the photos and then G-d knows what follows.
It’s very sad but a reality of life today.
I am really sorry this happened to you. I can’t understand why some moron felt that they had to report you for this but unfortunately because of the world we live in FB has to react like this–and you are right–it is to protect our babies.
I had a friend that had a picture of her 11mth old sons bum and they made her delete because someone reported it. I know it’s for everyone’s safety, but comeon what is cuter than a babies butt.
You seriously crack me up! LOL
Sigh. When will facebook learn that baby bums (and breastfeeding pictures!) are not pornographic? So sad. Particularly given some of the groups and pics they allow.
I love this picture!!! Definite overreaction on their part.
That being said, I can’t imagine not being able to post to FB for 24 ENTIRE hours…even if it is the public page and not your personal page. Way to keep it in perspective though – yes, meth would be worse.
Okay, enough about you…I’m totally stealing that idea because you are an awesome mom to have your kids paint on their favorite canvas. Wait, was that about you again? Dang. I tried a variety of comments, but it keeps coming back to your awesome idea and facebook just worrying that instead of paying attention to their site everyone will go out and paint themselves.
Ack I would die if I was banned for 24 hours!!!
I cannot believe they’ve banned this, there f**cking eejits planning the London Riots on FB and they let it go, clearly a baby’s botty is far more offensive than a gobs**te destroying peoples livelyhoods etc. Oh now I’m on my soap box, Hilarious pc by the way thou they look like they had a blast!!
No one puts Motherhood WTF in the corner! Well…except facebook I guess.
Insane! That pic is too cute! I’ve seen disturbing pics on FB and this is not one of them! UGH!
I can’t believe someone reported the photo as offensive!!! (the only way I know you could have been banned, I don’t think anyone on fb staff monitors the millions of people posting photos) I would still be in that stage of anger!
Glad that was your biggest problem of the day though. I coudl do without Facebook, twitter… not so much.
Missed you! Glad you’re back in all the marvelous channels of the interwebs. xoxo
Facebook doesn’t look at the “offending” pictures that get people banned. It’s just a system of people reporting a photo enough times to set off the trigger to get you in time out. I think you probably just have some uptight people viewing your page or you’ve pissed someone off. (I’ve done that and gotten everything on my wall reported, it’s lame).
Certainly it’s an over-reaction! Or jealously. I mean, those are some cute, painted buns on your kids.
Hey, paint counts as clothing at the Playboy Mansion (which I know from many, many Girls Next Door marathons). FB needs to get with the program.
What’s truly depressing is the amount of graphic and violent material that appears on FB that is not taken down. Brain-eating zombies? Sure, no prob! Hallmark Card baby butt? Call in the censors!
This is hilarious and really made me laugh out loud. I have a picture of my niece with body paint all over but she’s got a diaper on so I guess I am in the clear 🙂
I Hope you got video and send it to Funniest Home videos you might win $10,000. And Millions can enjoy your chioldrens self expression !
I assume these are your guys? The little man painting the bum of his big brother is just, well … I REALLY hope this is your Christmas card. It’s so cute that I’m jealous. Mine are now 9 and 11, and of mixed gender, so any attempts at duplication on my part will land me in jail.
I guess since it was on your public site that it makes some sense. Still, Facebook’s complete absence of a simple ‘Contact’ link drove me batty recently when they totally screwed up my blog’s public page.
Stop by when you can (www.olddognewtits.com) and bring your boys. They can add some color to the site. 🙂
Oh my gosh! So funny! At least you’ll always have twitter… the twitter would never turn their backs on your like that!
Wow, that’s a dang shame. I don’t know why someone would report it, but there are sicko’s out there who will take the picture out of context.
Absolutely hilarious, I am sure I would have gone through the same stages of grief as well… but the acceptance would have taken longer than a 24 hour ban! I think sharing that hilarious picture might have been worth it 🙂
